Old and new town signs

Project title: 2024 Beautification Town Signs Project

Project purpose or justification: From its inception, Buena Vista’s recreational facilities have distinguished our town as a cohesive, welcoming, and iconic community. We offer a fishing pond, rodeo grounds, dog park, basketball courts, skate park, pump track, and a bouldering garden, as well as over half a dozen parks featuring playground equipment, picnic tables, and grills (Buena Vista Recreation Department, 2016). Over the years, weather and decay have contributed to the need to upgrade our park signs; however, the Town’s recent branding change has emphasized our older, broken signs and highlighted our current inconsistent branding.

Committed to being good stewards of our public resources and natural setting, we provide high-quality, reliable services for the benefit of our citizens, guests, and employees The implementation of this project directly addresses the objectives the Board of Trustees and the community would like to achieve, and that contribute to the quality of life for Buena Vista citizens. Specifically:

  • Infrastructure: Maintaining all facilities through a fiscally responsible and intentionally planned infrastructure.
  • Environment: Fostering an environment that is safe, healthy, encourages conservation, and makes for friendly places where people want to live, work, and play.

Project objective: In 2018, Buena Vista created a cohesive wayfinding plan with objectives to celebrate our community while directing our visitors to the abundance of public resources, historic downtown, and vibrant economy. Because our public parks are at the heart of Buena Vista’s community, this small-scale improvement project adds immediate value and support to our economic and community development plan. Concurrent with the recommendations of the BV Wayfinding Committee, released in 2015, this project supports our need to:

  • Reinforce a sense of place for Buena Vista, enhancing our image and brand.
  • Support branding, and the distinct identity for the Town of Buena Vista with signage that blends with the historic yet modern feel of the town.
  • Highlight important community resources and destinations, and how to access them through clearly defined directional information.
  • Raise community and visitor awareness of Buena Vista’s character areas, including their location and amenities.
  • Direct visitors to Buena Vista’s character areas from major transportation arteries
  • Increase awareness of the BV character areas, helping to increase sales tax revenues, general interest in the community, economic growth, and investment.

Project scope: This proposal consists of nine small projects that either upgrade existing markers or create new signage for our parks.

Project deliverable:

Create new signs for the following locations:

  • Pump Track
  • Forest Square Park
  • Billy Cordova Memorial Park
  • Central Colorado Regional Airport
  • Columbine Park
  • Millie Crymble Park
  • Community Center

Update current signs at the following locations:

  • Mt. Olivet Cemetery
  • Community Center

Project stakeholders:

  • Town of Buena Vista Residents
  • Beautification Advisory Board

Project timeline:

Work must be completed before October 31, 2024

If you’ve noticed brighter signs, clearer directions, or just felt a stronger sense of place lately — you’re not imagining it. Over the past few years, Buena Vista has been quietly but purposefully rolling out our Wayfinding and Signage Master Plan, one sign at a time.

When the plan wrapped in 2018, the full vision felt bold. But instead of shelving it, we embraced the challenge, applying for grants, stretching our budget, and phasing in the work. The result? A town that’s becoming easier to navigate and more rooted in its identity.

To guide this effort, we surveyed community stakeholders, gathering feedback from residents, business owners, and visitors to ensure the design elements and locations reflect what matters most to the people who live, work, and play here. Their input shaped everything, from color palette and materials to placement and tone.

"These signs do more than point the way-they tell our story," said one BV resident. From the rustic wood textures to the clean, modern lines and updated town logo, every element reflects the soul of Buena Vista: welcoming, evolving, and proud of its place.

You’ll see new signage in spots that never had it before: Forest Square Park, the airport entrance, the Community Center, and refreshed signs in key gathering places. "They’re clean, bright, and thoughtfully designed to blend our mountain-town character with a fresh, friendly vibe."

But beyond aesthetics, these improvements show something deeper:
    We care.
We invest in our public spaces.
We want everyone, from longtime locals to first-time visitors, to feel the magic of Buena Vista.

This project isn’t about being “all things to all people.” It’s about being true to ourselves, celebrating our unique charm, and creating a place that invites people to slow down, stay awhile, and feel at home.

    • What do you think of the new signs?
    • What places do you hope we add next?

When Buena Vista completed its Wayfinding and Signage Master Plan in 2018, the full vision seemed ambitious. But through a thoughtful, phased approach—leveraging grants and available funding—the town has steadily brought that vision to life. Each updated and newly installed sign reflects more than just direction; it tells the story of a community that takes pride in its character, public spaces, and welcoming spirit. Clear and consistent signage helps residents and visitors feel connected, navigate with ease, and discover the unique charm of Buena Vista. This ongoing investment in wayfinding is a visible expression of the town’s values: accessibility, local pride, and a commitment to creating a place people love to explore.

“Clean, bright, and thoughtfully designed” is how one longtime community member described the new wayfinding elements, highlighting the unique blend of rustic and modern aesthetics—solid wood paired with crisp, urban-inspired colors. Reflecting on Buena Vista’s transformation over the years, they added, “Having been involved in early efforts to modernize, I’ve seen a lot of changes. But maybe part of our charm is subtlety. We don’t need to spell everything out. Buena Vista isn’t trying to be all things to all people—it invites you to slow down, settle in, and discover the magic for yourself... And if that doesn’t resonate, maybe Salida’s more your speed.”
