Project title: 2024 Chip Seal Street Project

Project purpose or justification: Many streets within the town need repair and rehabilitation. These are asphalted streets and by providing a chip seal application it will extend the useful life.

Project objective: To install chip-seal and crack-seal applications to existing Town of Buena Vista streets.

Project scope: The existing street with be swept, cleaned, crack sealed before the chip-seal application, compliant with CDOT SX mix of Town streets and Chip Sealing of various roads at various locations around Town. The streets selected for this year’s chip-seal projects are:

  • Windwalker Road
  • Dreamcatcher Road
  • Shaman Way
  • Connie Drive
  • South Sangre De Cristo Avenue and
  • Merrill Lane
  • Railroad Right of Way (Between Main Street and East Arkansas)

Project deliverables:

Materials:

Blotter Material: Blotter material for prime coating shall consist of aggregate base course conforming to the requirements specified for base course aggregate on the project. Blotter material for rejuvenating agent shall consist of dry, gritty sand conforming to the fine aggregate gradation of Table 703-2 in CDOT’s Standard Specifications, or as approved. Blotter material may be accepted in the stockpile at the source or at the roadway before placement.

Construction:

Prime coat and tack coat shall not be applied under the following conditions:

  • When the surface is wet.

  • When weather conditions would prevent the proper construction of the prime or tack coat.

Preparation of Surface: Preparation of the surface to be treated shall include all work necessary to provide a smooth, dry, uniform surface. The work shall include patching, brooming, shaping to required grade and section, compaction, and removal of unstable corrugated areas. The edges of existing pavements that are to be adjacent to new pavement shall be cleaned to permit the adhesion of asphalt materials.

Application of Blotter Material: If, after the application of the prime coat or rejuvenating agent the asphalt material fails to penetrate and the roadway must be used by traffic, blotter material shall be spread in the quantity required to absorb excess asphalt material.

Project timeline:

  • The Chip Seal Project will have 75 days from the contract start date.
  • The chip sealing should only affect one lane at a time, and there are no anticipated road closures, however the contractors will have flags and control traffic as needed.
Project budget:
  • Funding Source: 2024 Town of Buena Vista Adopted Budget, Street Improvements Capitol Fund ($166,000.00 Chip Seal).
    • Bid Submittal Cost: $112,347.60
    • Additional Scope: $23,427.45
