Project title: 2024 Crosswalk Project

Project purpose or justification: A 2022 report on pedestrian fatalities projects a concern for The Town of Buena Vista. Specifically, experts say that drivers and pedestrians are more distracted than ever with smartphones and headphones and that many streets are not designed properly for walkers creating dangerous conditions (Flags, 2022).

Project objective: To increase pedestrian safety along the 5 major crosswalks along HWY 24. Studies done by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) determined that crosswalk flags are up to 80% effective at stopping cars when used by pedestrians using them at crosswalks (Flags, 2024). A study completed in Las Vegas indicated a significant association between the use of pedestrian crosswalk flags and increased driver yielding. Drivers were more likely to yield to pedestrians carrying pedestrian crosswalk flags, both when the pedestrian indicated the intention to cross and when they were already in the roadway. Las Vegas Study

Project scope: Colorado State Highway 24 runs north to south through Buena Vista, Colorado. Just west of E. Main Street, there are 5 raised medians separating the two-lane highway traffic. Roughly 5 city blocks (400 ft.) away from one another, these medians mark the mid-point between roughly 70 feet of hwy. crossing (each).

  • To install 5 pedestrian safety systems

Project deliverables: The work includes installing 5 pedestrian safety systems to include:

  • Two sturdy all-weather storage bins with instructions and reflective tape
  • 12 Crosswalk Reflective Flags
  • Attachment devices for standard street signs
  • The See Me Flags are vinyl coated nylon flags made of a fluorescent material for high visibility ideal for crosswalk
  • Both sides of the crosswalk flags have a highly reflective strip sewn into both sides of the crosswalk flags
  • The crosswalk flags measure 12" x 12" x 24"

Project stakeholders:

  • Pedestrians
  • Drivers

Project timeline:

  • Full installation of project: August 31, 2024
